the synovial membrane

The joint is closed by a capsule that is upholstered by a thin layer of cells that is the synovial membrane, which in turn produces the synovial fluid that lubricates the joint and feeds the articular cartilage Hondrocream. The joint maintains itself thanks to the ligaments, tendons and muscles that prevent its separation.

In osteoarthritis the first thing that happens is an alteration of the cartilage. The surface area swells and softens, losing its elasticity. Little by little, the surface erodes and the cartilage wears away, and may eventually disappear, allowing the ends of the bones to contact directly.
